Aata Enjoyment in the Lifeaffirming Pleasures of Art Making
Art therapy uses art-making as role of the healing and psychotherapy process. The American Art Therapy Association offers the post-obit definition:
Art therapy is the therapeutic use of fine art making, within a professional relationship, by people who feel illness, trauma, or challenges in living, and by people who seek personal development. Through creating fine art and reflecting on the art products and processes, people tin can increase awareness of self and others cope with symptoms, stress, and traumatic experiences; enhance cerebral abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.
Inside the art therapy community there is some variation in how therapists utilize art with clients. Some art therapists focus primarily on the making of art every bit therapeutic in and of itself, or "art every bit therapy." Others may contain fine art-making into psychotherapy as a means of advice, exploration, and experience for the customer. Art-making may also exist incorporated into the piece of work of therapists who do not consider themselves to be art therapists, such equally using drawing or sculpting in play therapy. In this blog, I volition consider art therapy to encompass any of these approaches equally each has value.
Fine art therapists employ a diversity of art media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, and photography. Art therapy can be used to piece of work with individuals, families, and groups of any age. Sometimes the art-making may be structured by giving the client a directive to explore a specific topic in his/her art. In contrast, the open-studio approach provides a prophylactic surround where clients can create whatever fine art they feel inspired to do. Art therapy tin exist used with a diverseness of clients and situations, including grief and loss, low, stress and anxiety, trauma, children with acting out beliefs or ADHD, chronic mental affliction, substance abuse, eating disorders, and autism spectrum.
In my own piece of work, I have establish art to be a powerful tool for helping people to express themselves in a mode that words may not accept allowed. Equally a means of communication, sometimes the images nosotros create allow u.s. to express the things we do not know how to say or are too scared to say out loud. But frequently it is the procedure of creating that is the nigh important, helping us to helping u.s. to explore and observe something new about ourselves, or access a hidden attribute of ourselves.
